SPARK: New Light
August 13 - September 25, 2022
About the Exhibition
We are excited and to share the fifth annual SPARK exhibition, presented by Towson University, UMBC, and PNC Bank in partnership with the Peale. It’s a delight to be a part of the grand reopening of the Peale and present SPARK: New Light, presenting our light-themed exhibition in galleries first lit by gas lighting in 1816 which was an unprecedented marvel in a world of candles and oil lamps.
Like Rembrandt Peale who was both an artist and innovator, the artists featured in SPARK: New Light are multi-faceted thinkers who ask us to look closely and think deeply about our world. Through their illuminating works, they share stories of Baltimore's past and present, focus a new lens on the Peale's building and history, immerse us in animated microcosms, and share reflections on the joys and sorrows of our corporeal experience as humans.
In subtle and not-so-subtle works, they ask us to take stock of our collective story and take note of our changing climate, changing perceptions, and what lies ahead.
SPARK: New Light features 23 Towson University and UMBC faculty, student, and recent alumni artists and their collaborators:
Mark Burchick, Lynn Cazabon, Irene Chan, Grace Doyle, Adam Droneburg, Carrie Fucile, Alexandra Garove, Danielle Hawk, Fahmida Hossain, Ahlam Khamis, Jinyoung Koh, Diane Kuthy, Jenee Mateer, Kathy Marmor (with Penny Rheingans), Lisa Moren (with Tsvetan Bachvaroff, Dan Deacon, and Woody Lissauer), Kat Navarro, Timothy Nohe, Sookkyung Park, Corrie Francis Parks, Chris Peregoy, Foster Reynolds-Santiago, Lynn Tomlinson, and J.
